RankZoro
Product / AI Citation Tracking

AI citation tracking across the search engines your customers use

In shortRankZoro checks a query set against eight current engine columns—Google AI, Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, You.com, and LongCat—and records citation status, cited URL, and citation position where available. Results are sampled snapshots, not a census of every answer. Brand mentions and explicit recommendations require separate answer review.

Four outcomes you should evaluate separately

Organic ranking, a brand mention, a linked citation, and an explicit recommendation are not interchangeable. RankZoro's tracker measures citations and citation positions; use the stored answer context and manual spot checks when you need to evaluate wording or recommendations.

  1. 01

    Organic ranking

Where a URL sits in a list of classic search results.

Cause: relevance, quality, links, technical health.

  2. 02

    Brand mention

An AI answer names your brand in its text, with no link.

Cause: what the web broadly says about you.

  3. 03

    Citation

An AI answer attaches your page as a linked source.

Cause: your page answers the question clearly, with evidence.

  4. 04

    Recommendation

An AI answer explicitly suggests you as a choice.

Cause: strong fit plus corroboration from independent sources.

Each outcome can happen without the others. A page can rank first and never be cited; a brand can be recommended from a page that ranks nowhere.

How a tracking run works

The method is deliberately plain so you can judge how much weight a result deserves.

  1. 1

    Choose the prompts that matter

Add the questions your buyers actually ask: category questions, comparison questions, and problem questions. Include your brand name variations so mentions can be matched.

  2. 2

    Check the engine set

RankZoro checks the query against its current engine columns and saves citation flags, cited URLs, positions where available, answer snippets, and the check time.

  3. 3

    Read the citation result

Review cited versus not cited for each engine, then open the cited source. Use the separate competitor comparison to see which submitted domains each engine cites for the same query.

  4. 4

    Review recommendations manually

A citation does not prove endorsement. Ask the same neutral recommendation question in the live assistants and separately record whether the brand was mentioned, compared, or explicitly recommended.

  5. 5

    Repeat like for like

AI answers vary between runs. Keep the query, project, location, and engine sample stable when comparing checks after publishing changes.

What the results view shows

One row per prompt and engine, with your status and who else showed up. The layout below is illustrative; the domains and states are placeholders, not measurements.

Compare competitors on the same prompts

Add the competitors you actually lose deals to. RankZoro's comparison checks submitted domains against the same query and reports citation status by engine, so a gap is specific: this query, this engine, this source.

Gaps are most useful when you read the cited pages. If an engine keeps citing a competitor's comparison page and a third-party review, you have two concrete assets to match or earn, not a vague score to raise.

  • See prompts where a competitor is cited and you are absent
  • See which third-party domains an engine leans on for your category
  • Separate prompts where you are mentioned but not linked, which usually means a content or evidence gap

From a gap to a shipped fix

Tracking is only useful if it feeds work. These are the connected steps inside RankZoro.

Gap to page brief

Turn a missing prompt into a content brief aimed at the question, with the sources engines already show for it.

Schema and structure

Generate FAQ and other structured data for the page, then publish through your normal process.

Recheck

Re-sample the same prompts on your schedule and compare against your baseline.

How to read the numbers without fooling yourself

Citation data is useful and imperfect. These limits apply to every tool in this category, and we would rather you know them up front.

Samples, not totals

An engine can answer the same prompt differently minutes apart. RankZoro reports what it observed in sampled runs, not what every user saw.

Personalization and location

Real users may see different answers based on location, history, and settings. Tracked prompts approximate a neutral query.

No guarantees

Fixing a gap improves your chances; it does not oblige an engine to cite you. Treat movement as evidence, not a promise.

A citation is not a sale

Being linked as a source shows up in your analytics as referral traffic only when users click. Track both.

Where teams use it first

Three common starting points.

In-house marketers

Build a stable citation baseline for the queries that map to pipeline, then report changes separately from organic rankings.

Business owners

Check whether your important pages are being cited, then manually review whether assistants describe your business accurately.

Agencies

Run the same prompt set across clients and package results with the reporting tools in your plan.

Frequently asked questions

What is an AI citation?

An AI citation is a link or source attribution that an AI search engine shows alongside an answer, pointing to a page it used. It is different from a brand mention, where the answer names you without linking, and from a recommendation, where the answer explicitly suggests you as a choice.

Does RankZoro guarantee that AI engines will cite my site?

No. RankZoro measures sampled visibility and helps you find and fix gaps. Engines decide what to cite, and answers vary between runs, so no tool can guarantee a citation or recommendation.

How are citations different from organic rankings?

An organic ranking is the position of a URL in a list of results. A citation is a source attached to a generated answer. A page can rank well and never be cited, or be cited without ranking first. Track them separately.

Which AI engines can it track?

The current tracker table has eight engine columns: Google AI, Perplexity, ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, You.com, and LongCat. Product coverage can change, so use the engines shown in your workspace as the source of truth.

Why do my results change between runs?

Generated answers are not fixed lists. Retrieval, wording, and source selection can change from one run to the next, which is why repeated sampling matters more than a single reading.

Can I compare competitors?

Yes. Enter competitor domains in the comparison view to check which submitted domains each engine cites for the same query. This compares citations; it does not automatically classify sentiment or explicit recommendations.

What should I do when I am mentioned but not cited?

Look at which pages the engine cited instead. Usually the cited pages answer the question more directly or carry clearer evidence. Update your own page to answer it first and support claims with sources, then recheck.

Run your first sample before you change anything

Start with a citation baseline in RankZoro, then manually review the same neutral questions for brand mentions and explicit recommendations. Build the plan from evidence, not guesses.
